A pregnant woman gently resting her hands on her bump

Matrescence

The profound transition of becoming a mother — and why it deserves to be gently prepared for.

Definition

What is matrescence?

Matrescence is the developmental, physical and psychological transformation a woman undergoes when she becomes a mother. Coined by anthropologist Dana Raphael in the 1970s, it compares motherhood to adolescence — a significant rite of passage characterised by shifting hormones, an altered identity and evolving relationships.

It is not just one moment of birth; it is a journey that begins in pregnancy and continues long after the baby arrives. It changes the body, the mind, the heart and the sense of who we are.

What matrescence touches

Understanding these four areas can help you feel more prepared, less alone and more compassionate toward yourself.

Physical & hormonal

Massive surges and drops in hormones, structural brain changes, physical recovery and a new body to gently inhabit.

Psychological & identity

A shift from the woman you were to the mother you are becoming. That transition deserves space, time and kindness.

Social & emotional

Navigating vulnerability, changing relationships, new roles and the emotional reality of early motherhood.

Spiritual & practical

Finding rhythm, trust and confidence in daily life with a newborn while honouring your own needs.
